XPS sandwich panel is a type of sandwich panel that is made with XPS (extruded polystyrene) foam core and glued to different types of skins such as fiberglass (FRP) or aluminium sheets.
Extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam is low density light weighted material. It has superb thermal insulation and sound insulation properties. Generally it’s used as insulation materials for constructions under the finishing layer of building, or as insulation layer of certain products that need to be thermal & acoustic insulation. XPS foam itself can’t be used as decoration materials (finishing) so we laminate it with other surface materials such as metals (aluminium, steel, copper etc) for decoration purpose or with other nonmetals (GRP, calcium silicate etc) to form a sandwich panel.
XPS foam core sandwich panel has excellent thermal insulation & low expansion ratio, it has more than 99% percentage of closed area which can efficiently prevent the air from flowing in & out.
XPS foam core sandwich panel has low water absorption. Thermal insulation function decreases when the insulation material absorbs water (water could turn into ice which leads to poor thermal insulation), but XPS doesn’t absorb water thus no water will enter into it.
The physical structure of XPS foam core is like tiny honeycomb structure, it’s light in weight but with high strength, it’s easy to cut and install but not easy to break.
It has a stable physical structure that will not easily age or decompose, so it has a long service life.
Aluminium XPS sandwich panel can be used as wall panels for building exterior & interior partition, also for cold room (cold storage room), because of the nice decorative effects from aluminium sheets & superb thermal insulation from XPS.
FRP XPS sandwich panel is used as panels to build truck body for cold storage, owing to the good property of anti-corrosive & high impact resistance from HPL sheet & good thermal insulation from XPS core.
